OK, well most have you have seen the news that the bin is GONE. I’m so excited. You can really see how much space we have with it out of there. And I can get started!
What’s that you say? You see some raised beds in this picture? Yes! On Sunday my Dad and I put a few together – hard work! Easy in terms of construction but man am I out of shape. I’m really happy with the beds. They are all a little different as I was using whatever lumber I could find in the back yard. I was lucky to have this much – I could have spent a LOT of money on these beds… Here are some more pictures:
A close up: some were made with 2X4, some with 2X6 and some with 2X11. They all used 2X4 uprights (actual 2X4 as it was old fir from our Victorian house). We used a pneumatic nail gun and framing nails to put them together.
We laid the sides on the uprights, made sure they were square/flush etc. and then nailed in the sides. Repeated (both long sides first) then we held up the sides and attached the short sides piece by piece, one end first. At the time the bin was still there so we stacked them up until we could move them into the proper spot.
I love this bed the most – we made it with some nice t&g cedar I bought in 2006 by accident (ha!).
you’ll be shocked to hear this, but I also cleaned up a lot. You wouldn’t know unless you’d been here a few times….
So, the beds are built! I ordered the soil today, and it comes tomorrow morning. I’m hoping to put some of my seedlings in tomorrow (probably the squash), but I haven’t had a chance to harden them off 😦 I haven’t figured out how to make that job more manageable.
What I don’t plant tomorrow night I will harden off.
I can’t wait to get the beds in place, the soil in them, the mulch laid in between the beds… it will look like a real garden!
