I saved the peppers, and the tomatoes are sprouting!
If you remember from my mistakes post, I had planted the pepper and strawberry seeds too deep. When they didn’t come up after a month I mucked up the dirt in a desperate attempt to get them closer. It worked for the peppers and I now have 8 healthy seedlings starting. I’m pretty excited about them.
Two of my tomatoes (gold nugget) sprouted yesterday too. For some reason I was more worried about the toms than any other plant – I remember as a kid watching my father spend a lot of time nursing them to health and talking about them being notorious failures.
In celebration I got on it and hung a light 8″ above the plants to supplement the sunlight they’re already getting. I really want these tomatoes to make it!
This weekend I need to start 2 more varieties of tomatoes, but I need more pots. Ack!
I also am about to start some potatoes- my neighbour has a stack of tires he wants to get rid of. When he heard what I was using it for he got really excited. A couple hours later he was back with his wife asking me to explain it again. They’re renovating right now, but when they’re done they’re going to try it too. I spent over half an hour with them talking about the raised beds I put in, the mulch, where to get soil etc. Some other neighbours dropped by to talk about my progress too that day. That’s one of the really lovely sides of urban farming – the community is that much closer…
