I haven’t been writing much lately because I’ve been ridiculously busy! I’ve been in the garden as much as I can, which isn’t as much as I’d like of course. Things are coming along nicely so far. The cilantro and romaine lettuce sprouted, as did the carrots in the polycultural bed (that makes at least two veggies in there so far, yay!). The savoy cabbage is not happy but limping along – it got very tangled in the trays. The Danish Ballhead cabbage is coming along nicely though, and the cauliflower was just transplanted this weekend – along with some of the leeks, onions and runner beans. I planted some peas seeds, but not both varieties, and I also planted the first round of winterkeeper beets (more each month) and parsnips and fennel. I sure hope the fennel does well, I love it! Actually I love parsnips too. And beets. Anyway, I’m getting excited, and hungry!
The big reason I haven’t had the time or energy to keep you updated is that the preschool garden I’m working on is in full force right now. I’ve been going to meetings, trying to get free soil, borrow tools, create instructions and get materials lists together. It’s taking a lot of my time in the evenings and weekends -especially this coming weekend. It’s all over by 3pm on Saturday though, and I’m still excited to put it all in! I am going to bring some of my seeds and plants because westcoast seeds isn’t able to donate at this time of year. They were really excited about the project and asked me to apply for next season, which I will.
Anyway, I probably won’t get to do much gardening this week. I need to spend some more time on the big polytunnel just tidying it up, and I also started a small tunnel that just needs tidying now too. I also still need to build the last bed which I have been procrastinating on for some reason. I don’t know why – it shouldn’t take more than an hour since it’s all prepped to go. I’m desperate for the space. I’m growing a LOT!
I am going to start a bunch of other stuff soon – my June transplants, like watermelon, cucumbers, dill etc. Any tips on those ones?
