What are your thoughts on spinach? I can’t see how it’s a good use of space considering the amount of harvest I’m getting. I have two patches going. Both I started by just taking leaves here and there as I needed them, keeping up with its growth. Then one patch got a bit too full, and it looked like it was going to bolt. I want the space for more carrots so I decided to pull all the plants and blanch and freeze the harvest. From a 4X4 plot I got about 2 cups of cooked spinach. Before that and from the other patch, just picking leaves, I’ve harvested about another 1.5-2 cups cooked. I don’t know when it’s going to bolt but we’re talking about approx 8X6 of garden space for very little harvest. I like spinach, but I’m not sure I like it that much!
Is there a variety of spinach that produces better? Was it our lacklustre spring? Any other tips before I give up on that crop?
