Who is Wolf and Finch Urban Farm?
Wolf and Finch is a Vancouver, BC based urban homestead in the Downtown Eastside. I am a mother of two who works full time while striving to teach my children about self-sufficiency and sustainable living.
What is Urban Homesteading?
Homesteading means different things to different people. To me it includes:
- growing your own produce
- raising livestock
- storage and preservation of your produce (jams, pickles, chutneys etc.)
- cooking, brewing and more (including making yoghurt, cheese, beer etc.)
- knitting and sewing your own clothing, household items and more
- producing your own power (solar, wind etc)
At the same time, “urban homesteading” incorporates more than either word on its own. It has come to mean a movement of people committed to living sustainably in the city, to living off the earth in the midst of a man-made world. It’s the story of farmers who go dancing on Fridays, or who have to fight the city to keep animals for food out the back of a condo. Urban homesteading is an old idea in a new society, and it is practiced by people from all different backgrounds, for many different reasons. I happen to think it’s the way of the future, a positive throwback that could fight off the almost unstoppable climate and social disaster headed our way.
Can I come see your farm?
If you would like to come by to take a look at how the homestead is progressing just drop me an email.
